About BMI
What is BMI?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a standard measure used to gauge whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height. It's a useful tool to get a general idea of your weight status.
Why BMI Matters?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) fact sheet on Obesity and overweight, in 2022, 1 in 8 people in the world were living with obesity. Since 1990, adult obesity has more than doubled, and adolescent obesity has quadrupled. Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers, significantly affecting quality of life.
Important Disclaimer
BMI is a useful screening tool but it does not differentiate between fat and muscle. For athletes or very muscular individuals, BMI may overestimate body fat. Conversely, it may underestimate body fat in older adults who have lost muscle mass. Therefore, BMI should be used as a reference and considered alongside other health indicators. Please consult a doctor for health concerns.
